When heritage meets high-tech
Hospital lighting can be complex. Each area needs its own type of lighting to work properly. At Prince of Wales Hospital’s new $870 million building, we had to light many different spaces. Each one had its own rules to follow under Australian Standard AS/NZS 1680.2.5 for hospital lighting.
The biggest challenge was lighting the walkway that connects the old hospital to the new 13-storey building. This bridge helps patients, visitors and staff move between buildings safely. We also had to light reception areas, staff break rooms, offices, storage rooms and wet areas. Reception areas needed warm, welcoming light. Staff rooms needed bright task lighting for paperwork. Wet areas needed tough lights that could handle hospital cleaning chemicals. Every space was different but all the lights had to work together as one system.
Lighting challenges across healthcare zones
The Industralight team started by studying the building plans. And confirming what the Australian Standards required. We worked closely with electrical contractors to create LED lighting that would work perfectly in each hospital area.
We picked three main types of lights for different jobs. Our Linear Suspension Series became the star of the walkway. These long, thin LED lights hang from the ceiling and create a clear path of light. They guide people smoothly from the old building to the new one without any dark patches or confusing shadows.
We used our XT-R Recessed LED Panel and Decor 26W LED Downlight. in other areas like the offices, reception and waiting areas. These lights sit flush in the ceiling and give bright, even light that helps staff read documents and work on computers without eye strain.
Products used in the project:
These types of lighting systems can be great for projects including:
- Education spaces that require muti-faceted uses
- Shopping and retail where different activities are taking place
- Galleries and centres that need bright even light

Lights that last, staff that stay alert
The new LED lights work exactly as planned. The linear lights in the walkway create a clear path that guides people between buildings. No more getting lost or feeling confused about which way to go. The task lighting in work areas now meets all Australian Standards. Staff can read documents and see patients clearly without straining their eyes.
These LED lights also save money. They use about 70% less power than the old lights while giving better quality light. This saves the hospital thousands of dollars every year on electricity bills. Our LEDs are built tough enough for hospital life. They keep working reliably even though the hospital runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Industralight luminaires are optimised for lighting complex spaces like hospitals. And our track record proves our strength in developing plans for the medical and health industry.
