Complex lighting challenges across pharmaceutical manufacturing zones
The brief for Noumed Pharmaceutical’s Adelaide facility was complex. This $100 million development needed lighting systems supporting pharmaceutical manufacturing across several levels. The project required interior, exterior and emergency lighting throughout a 44,000m² site.
This project needed lighting across a wide range of rooms. Each requires different task lighting depending on the activity within. Some of these include:
- Offices, meeting rooms and tea rooms
- Amenities, bathrooms, change rooms and gym
- Manufacturing floor, chemical and cleaning stores
- Technological and communications rooms
- Chemical, boiler/compressor rooms, fire pumps and control room
- Carparks and external walkways
FDC Building outlines the elements per level. The ground floor’s 17,800m² housed pharmaceutical amenities, including storage and boiler rooms. Level one featured 1,500m² of laboratories and offices needing precise task lighting. Level two holds service platforms. And the 7,000m² warehouse needed robust industrial lighting.
Each area demanded compliance with AS/NZS lighting standards for industrial tasks. Pharmaceutical areas typically require 500-1000 lux, whilst warehouses range depending on activity. For instance, loading bays need 100-200 lux, with working and office areas needing up to 400 lux. And external areas like car parks need, on average, 5-10 lux for low activity, going up to 40 lux for higher activity. Infront Electrical Contractors needed an experienced team to deliver successfully on this project.
Custom luminaires deliver performance across diverse pharmaceutical spaces
Our approach began with comprehensive lighting simulations across all zones. Working with Infront Electrical Contractors, we mapped requirements for all levels. After feedback and following approval, our team manufactured luminaires aligned with construction timeframes.
Internal lighting for workspaces included panels, downlights, and highbays installed in warehouse areas. The building’s exterior uses battens and bunkers around the perimeter. And the car park used our LED streetlights attached to poles embedded into cages. The contractors also installed emergency and exit fixtures throughout, meeting safety regulations.
Several products required customisation for dimming, size, colour, materials or drivers. Our skilled professionals coordinated shipments as needed, demonstrating our experience with complex builds. And this type of staged delivery can also be seen in:

Comprehensive lighting supports Noumed’s production
The completed installation transformed Noumed’s facility into a world-class pharmaceutical environment. Every zone features appropriate illumination supporting safe, efficient practices. External lighting illuminates pathways and car parks reliably. And the multi-level complex maintains consistent light quality throughout. Industralight supplied top-tier lighting solutions on schedule, customised to requirements.
Our team remained in constant communication throughout the project. And rigorous specifications were met with precision. Industralight was able to sort solutions, coordinate custom manufacturing and deliver to schedule. Operations at the facility began this year. And it proves to be another successfully completed project.
