Compact apartments need thoughtful solutions
Habilis is purpose-built housing for people experiencing homelessness due to mental illness. Each of the 20 studio apartments measures between 20 and 30 square metres. The architects wanted surface-mounted lighting that would illuminate these spaces without overwhelming them. They needed fixtures with:
- A slimline profile that wouldn’t dominate small rooms
- Central back cable positioning for clean installation
- Dimmable capability for resident control
- White finishes to match the residential aesthetic
The electrical contractors required precise dimensions and straightforward installation. Every millimetre mattered in these spaces where residents would rebuild their independence.
Modified luminaires engineered to specification
Industralight worked with the customer to modify our linear LED luminaires. The luminaires were manufactured at 450x42x90mm with central back cable positioning. This allowed for efficient installation onto the walls without visible cable runs. We finished each luminaire in white to blend in with the residential design. And the dimmable LED lighting gives residents control over their environment. Our manufacturing precision meant we could deliver these to custom specifications.
This type of adaptable solution suits projects where human-centred design drives specifications like:
- Healthcare facilities, including hospitals and senior care residences
- Spa or recovery spaces like saunas and plunge pools for physiotherapy
- Museums or galleries that require lower lighting levels for sensitive media
- Theatres or cinemas that needed control over lighting levels on entry and exit

Lighting that supports independence
The modified linear LED luminaires now illuminate all 20 apartments at Habilis. Residents can dim their lighting to suit throughout the day. This control matters in homes designed around dignity and autonomy. The slimline profile means the luminaires enhance each compact space. Illumination across the walls and ceilings creates an atmosphere that feels welcoming. The central cable positioning delivered the clean aesthetic envisioned. And the luminaires were installed with internal drivers and a fixing bracket.
As a result, Habilis Summer Hill has earned the Architecture AU Social Impact Award. And the Development of the year – Social Infrastructure by Urban Developer in 2025. Industralight is proud to supply lighting to support initiatives like this. We prove that custom-manufacturing for social, residential and commercial projects can be straightforward. Our collaborative problem-solving delivers results in all kinds of specific applications.
