Poor under-carriage visibility was making inspection work harder than it needed to be

The South Dynon maintenance depot has serviced Melbourne’s train fleet since the early 1960s. It is currently undergoing an upgrade. However, it is still a busy, working facility. The trains bring oil, dirt, grime, and also animal strikes from constant activity. The lighting systems need to keep pace with the environment and the busy workers.

Principal contractor Laing O’Rourke led a significant upgrade to the South Dynon depot. They worked on:

  • Covering tracks 5–8
  • New office and storage areas
  • Upgraded infrastructure across the facility

One of the most critical challenges was lighting. Workers at the track level needed to see the undercarriage of trains during servicing and inspection clearly. The depot needed luminaires positioned low enough to direct light into the undercarriage zone. So the luminaires would need to sit in tight spaces where contact during servicing is likely. The contractors needed something that could handle the environment and deliver strong illumination.

Powerful ML80 LED battens achieved clear under-carriage clarity

Industralight supplied the ML80 ARC® Tubular Polycarbonate LED batten. It’s a luminaire built for exactly this kind of environment. The chemical-resistant polycarbonate body has an IP69 rating for dust and moisture protection. And it also has an IK10 rating for impact resistance. It handles oil, grime, and accidental knocks without issue. With a 120° beam angle, it spreads light evenly across a wide area. And with stainless steel mounting brackets holding the fixtures, it’s a long-lasting solution.

Our production team supplied the ML80 with mounting clips to install the products from each side. Unlike other linear battens, the 120° beam angle delivers wide coverage across the undercarriage. And they work in combination with the depot’s existing LED battens for optimum brightness. Together, the two systems delivered the level of illumination needed for the maintenance facility.

Bright, consistent lighting that engineers and inspectors can actually rely on

With the ML80 batten luminaires in place, engineers and inspectors at South Dynon can now see clearly. The undercarriage of trains during servicing and inspection is visible. And the lighting reaches where it needs to go, delivering the brightness required for close-up review. The luminaires are also holding up in a depot environment. The polycarbonate construction resists oil and grime. The IK10 rating handles contact during busy servicing sessions. And the IP69 rating keeps everything protected from the dust and moisture that come with an active industrial site.
