The challenge of honouring heritage through light
Tranby Aboriginal Co-operative is one of Australia’s oldest independent Aboriginal-controlled organisations. It started in 1957 and is a community-based education cooperative. Hence, it is run by and for Aboriginal peoples in Glebe. Generate Interiors worked closely with local Indigenous communities to design the interiors. Together, they developed organic, nature-inspired designs for the space. Research shows that culturally responsive educational environments improve student engagement. Therefore, thoughtful design was essential.
The electrical contractor approached Industralight with complex drawings. In this case, the vision required custom-manufactured lighting that could blend with the cultural aesthetic. However, it also needed to deliver functional light for educational spaces. Additionally, the luminaires had to complement the organic architectural elements.
Engineering bespoke solutions through collaboration
First, our skilled team began with detailed 3D lighting simulations. This process tested the output, intensity and how light would be cast around the rooms. Electrical engineers, contractors and designers could visualise the lighting effects. And how it would be cast on certain architectural elements.
Once approved, our manufacturing team started production. We created bespoke curved versions. These were based on our LUS series products. Each piece required careful attention as we needed to achieve the curved forms. Furthermore, our commitment to quality products means that every piece we engineer in this project is to spec. Which meant that every fixture maintained performance and quality standards.
Moreover, our approach ensured continuous communication. We stayed in touch throughout the entire process. And we delivered the finished custom-manufactured lighting pieces to site. Ready for installation, they were packed with easy-to-follow instructions for the contractors. This project demonstrates our efficiency in turning complex visions into reality.

A space that celebrates culture through considered design
The completed installation transformed the educational environment. Curved and linear luminaires now light up the spaces at Tranby Aboriginal College. They support modern learning needs while respecting the cultural heritage. Enhancing the organic aesthetic, the lighting honours the designers’ vision. Furthermore, it showcases the heritage-listed site while meeting standards for education.
Additionally, Industralight has worked on projects that need lighting for culturally significant locations. The Kananook Car Park features a sculptural facade symbolising the flow of the local creek. And the NSW State Library has panels behind the stained glass windows installed in 1942. And our specialty in custom-made fixtures is second to none. Our work at the Norwest Christian College is seen in the illuminated, tree-inspired installation. And the Telstra offices feature bespoke strip lighting curved around ceilings.
Tranby remains a space for the Aboriginal community to study and train. Typically, students undertake courses in legal studies, community development and business here.
